Initial/Original Story Idea

Basic story for the game would be something like, Ragnarök is fast approaching and you’re a Norse warrior who is yet to die in battle. Now with ragnarok fast approaching you want to get into Valhalla.Unfortunately for you upon seeing your hubris and pride the gods have seen fit to curse you, unable to reach Valhalla until you best all the gods in combat. As a result you now must fight your way through the minions of the gods of norse mythos and then the gods themselves in order to reach Valhalla. As a rougelike the plot is quite loose and just serves as a reason to have the main character do what is needed. Really just consists of making your way through a series of dungeons where you will end up fighting bosses (gods) in a certain order until you manage make your way to Odin and then upon beating him you'll have the cursed lifted.

Changes and reasons for them

Above is what was the initial story for the game, which was quite basic in it’s form. The plan was simply to have you be a cursed warrior by one of the gods. This curse made you unable to enter Valhalla until you had defeated quite a fair few of them, reach Odin defeat him as well and then have the cursed lifted and entry to Valhalla granted.

The story’s purpose was to simply serve as a way to get the player to progress through the dungeons and give them a reason to fight through to the end. However through asking people what they thought and feedback received as well it was found that people wanted a more tangible story that gave them a clearer sense of what the point of it was instead of just a you had been cursed by the gods.

Additionally, the work that the enemies team and room team had done in the first week made the progression that had been laid out thus far not fit as well and so as a result the story had to be redone from the initial idea and progression that had been laid out.

Now the game’s number of dungeons has been condensed from 7 or more to just 4 or 5. This will hopefully allow for a more cohesive art style as well as making sure that the pace of the game does not drag on as well. The story and game now have more tie ins to each other as well which will hopefully reduce and limit the amount of ludonarrative dissonance that the player experiences while playing the game.

The story itself is now quite different as instead of being cursed by the gods as a whole, it is now just loki who has decided to take it upon himself to mete out judgement upon you and so the gods you face and the reasons you face them better reflect that. This should give the player a clearer sense of reason for why they are doing what they're doing and the reason in which they are doing it
