chore(acir)!: Move is_recursive
flag to be part of the circuit definition
#4221
Conversation
…a tooling flag, serde needs to be fixed still
// would set the is_recursive flag to be true.
// This would eliminate the need for nargo to have a --recursive flag
// | ||
// End result is that we may just be able to get it off of builder_, like builder_.is_recursive_friendly |

I settled on this flag living on the composer as I didn't feel the need to thread it down to the builder. The builder is created when we a create a circuit anyway which is the same time this flag is set.
EDIT: I realized that in order to specify whether a circuit is recursive friendly during verification without the circuit description we need the recursive flag to live on the verification key. I ended up putting is_recursive_circuit
flag on the builder and setting a new field on the verification key when we compute the key.
would be good to check the js tests we have and also create an issue to document this change |

I changed this to just generateProof
as we no longer need the distinction between an intermediate and a final proof on the tooling layer. However, I know this is a breaking change so I could bring back generateFinalProof
and generateIntermediateProof
with a deprecation warning until we are ready to break. Or we can make the next release a breaking one for NoirJS users.

I'm thinking we could just keep both generateFinalProof
and generateIntermediateProof
with a deprecation warning for a few weeks while people migrate to generateProof
.

For recursion, I think we should just make the breaking change as its not really an official feature yet

@signorecello something to be aware of when this gets merged in

Yeah I agree with @kevaundray we have some fierce users working with recursion but not enough to justify maintaining a deprecation working.
My opinion is that we can "practice" deprecation warnings because they will be needed at some point, but for now we're in alpha stage. Does it break? Go read docs. After a day working with viem
that doesn't even have versioned docs, I really think we're way ahead of the standard tooling already.

Thanks for the tag though, I'm happy to get rid of the difference between intermediate proofs
and final proofs
. Would appreciate if you could update the docs too. I'll take care of the examples once this gets merged

@signorecello Would you prefer I update here as part of this PR or in a followup to this one you just made noir-lang/noir#4187

I made the docs PR (noir-lang/noir#4199) as a followup to yours on the Noir repo

…nition (AztecProtocol#4221) Resolves AztecProtocol#4222 Currently in order to specify whether we want to use a prover that produces SNARK recursion friendly proofs, we must pass a flag from the tooling infrastructure. This PR moves it be part of the circuit definition itself. The flag now lives on the Builder and is set when we call `create_circuit` in the acir format. The proof produced when this flag is true should be friendly for recursive verification inside of another SNARK. For example, a recursive friendly proof may use Blake3Pedersen for hashing in its transcript, while we still want a prove that uses Keccak for its transcript in order to be able to verify SNARKs on Ethereum. However, a verifier does not need a full circuit description and should be able to verify a proof with just the verification key and the proof. An `is_recursive_circuit` field was thus added to the verification key as well so that we can specify the accurate verifier to use for a given proof without the full circuit description. --------- Signed-off-by: kevaundray <[email protected]> Co-authored-by: ledwards2225 <[email protected]> Co-authored-by: kevaundray <[email protected]>

It isn't clear after some of the recursion cleanup in #4221 why `double_verify_proof` is failing the solidity verifier. `double_verify_proof` was being used as a recursive proof itself to be verified inside of `double_verify_nested_proof`. I have renamed this test to `double_verify_proof_recursive` to note that its proof should be used as input to another circuit. I have also included a new test `double_verify_proof` where we accept two non-nested proofs and use the Keccak prover. This is what we were previously expecting for `double_verify_proof`. I also brought back `arretenberg-acir-tests-bb-sol` for a few tests. --------- Co-authored-by: Maddiaa <[email protected]>

Resolves #4222
Currently in order to specify whether we want to use a prover that produces SNARK recursion friendly proofs, we must pass a flag from the tooling infrastructure. This PR moves it be part of the circuit definition itself.
The flag now lives on the Builder and is set when we call
create_circuit
in the acir format. An
is_recursive_circuit
field was thus added to the verification key as well so that we can specify the accurate verifier to use for a given proof without the full circuit description.
