Proposed Research Agenda:

  • Research Year/Date: 2024
  • Participant Type: Outside Researchers
  • [Research Method] Type: Unmoderated qualitative survey

Research Roadmap (this research is a subset of this roadmap)

Summary of Research

Hack for LA is creating a Research Ethics Handbook. The handbook will walk researchers through the various stages of the data collection process by using real-life examples.

We invite you to contribute by sharing some of your stories of negative and/or triggering moments you encountered as a researcher in the research interview process. We hope they will become valuable teaching moments and increase visibility over how an interviewer's race, socioeconomic background, gender, sexuality, disability, religion, and status as a ESL/multilingual speaker can shape the interview process.

Additional Information for Participants

Identifying information such as names or email addresses will not be collected. All responses will be anonymous.

This survey should take approximately 15 minutes of your time.

Participation is voluntary and there is no compensation.

This study may have no benefits to you. Organizations engaging in research and society may benefit by understanding the daily realities of researchers. There are no known risks beyond the possible loss of confidentiality.

Data will be kept confidential. It will be encrypted and stored in a password protected repository. Only the researchers involved in this study and those responsible for research oversight will have access to responses.

Please feel free to ask any questions about anything you don't understand at [email protected].

To know more about your rights as a research participant, please refer to the UCLA Research Participant Bill of Rights

The Research Ethics Handbook will be published in open-source format.

If you would like to receive updates on the progress of this project and publication, please bookmark this page and check in periodically.

Question

Did you have a negative and/or triggering moment as an interviewer?

Purpose

Our goals include teaching researchers how to ethically conduct research, handle negative and/or triggering moments while collecting data, and provide insights for organizations to better protect their researchers in these situations.

We intend to author a Researcher's Bill of Rights at the conclusion of this project.

Participant Type

  • Other, External Researchers

Methods

This is a voluntary, anonymous, open-ended, qualitative survey. None of the questions are required. Participants can answer the questions they wish.

The window for collecting responses will cover a three-month period.

The data collected here will serve as examples to ground analysis and provide guidelines for researchers to follow in the Hack for LA's Research Ethics Guide. The stories and information collected may be used for group discussions on teams that are preparing to start a research project.

Current Status

  • The research plan has been created and is in progress. No data have been collected

All Issues

Outstanding task items

Depending on the number of responses, additional Hack for LA researchers, external to the Internship team may perform some of the data analysis. TBD.
