Cholesterol is a lipidic, waxy alcohol found in the cell membranes and transported in the blood plasma of all animals. It is an essential component of mammalian cell membranes where it establishes proper membrane permeability and fluidity. Cholesterol is the principal sterol synthesized by animals, but small quantities are synthesized in other eukaryotes, such as plants and fungi. It is almost completely absent among prokaryotes, which include bacteria. Cholesterol is classified as a sterol. 1

The normal range of values for total cholesterol varies by age, but typical lower and upper bounds that are considered desirable are 125 - 200 mg/dL. 2, 3 The normal range combined with a data-driven approach to empirically establish possible low and high values, leads us to choose 90 and 400.
