I just got charged $10, which is fine, but you really need to send me a receipt via email when this happens. And for extra credit, warn me the day before in a separate email.

This is why I think you need to do this:

  1. Everybody else sends email receipts. That's really the main reason. It's a convention now that if you charge somebody's card, especially in an offline background process, you send an email receipt.
  2. It is way easier for me to forward an email to a bookkeeper than it is to log in to a site, save an HTML page and then forward that. I consider gittip donations a marketing-related business expense.
  3. If you warn me first, it might reduce chargebacks / fraud complaints / failed charges. You can put a link in the warning email back to my account so that I can immediately cancel my giving.

Keep up the good work!

Is there an email provider anyone recommends? Mailchimp?

+2 via @iElectric over on #1606:

As part of funding campain for https://gittip.com/kiberpipa we got two requests to let users know (with email or sms) that funds were deducted from their credit card.

I told them history is available from "History/Giving" tab in their profile, but they weren't able to figure that part of for themselves.

after reading #1022, i am not sure this would actually solve the use case presented here. At least it wouldn't solve the "we're going to charge you tomorrow" reminder email

+1.

I reticketed the part about the weekly reminder email as #2224, since that can be done independently of this (and will likely be simpler than this one).

I believe a receipt (with both gifts given and received shown) will handle the rest of this issue, as well as all of #1022.

A receipt is important AND a reminder in advance is important. A receipt
is nice for people that are giving to gittip and want to track that as an
expense.

The email should also be sent if the charge has failed. cf #2666, cc @wrought

Modifying title to reflect expanded focus: not just receipts (success) but also failure notices.

It would also be nice to set a billing email address.
