As a data portal owner, I want to create silver-level or higher certificates so I can show I have great data.

There is no standard markup for the answers required for higher-level certificates, so a JSON API for creating certificates that allows a response for any question would do the job.

So, as a data portal owner I'd need to write a program to call the API for my datasets each time they are added or changed. To earn a silver (or higher) certificate, I'd need to provide the required answers either by:

  • using some defaults for my portal (e.g. my twitter account, I backup nightly)
  • adding some metadata for each dataset (e.g. where's the technical documentation)

I just tried to earn a certificate for some of my data and this was the shortfall for Silver from the "How can I improve my open data" page:

  • provide technical documentation for the data
  • provide instructions about how suggest improvements to the way you publish data
  • provide contact information for people to send questions about privacy and disclosure of personal details to.
  • guarantee that your data will be available in this form for at least a year

Seems 3 of these could be portal defaults and I just need to address the "technical documentation" question.

@Floppy - Does that sound right?

How far could the CKAN Plug-in #1252 go in supporting the use of the API? Could the Plug-in read a portal configuration file to answer some questions, leaving only the dataset specific questions to be addressed?

I believe @Zephod is interested in this too. Tom any current plans?

Would have been really helpful in December but it will be months before we
loop back around to trying this again. Depends on demand from customers TBH.
