HOT Export Tool Help Documentation

Mhairi O'Hara edited this page Mar 26, 2015 · 6 revisions

Project Idea

The task below is part of the contribution that candidates applying for a project with OSM and HOT on the Outreachy project must complete. This task originates from the proposed project to 'Improve help documentation of HOT Export Tool features on Homepage'. Further information on the project can be found on the listed GitHub issue.

Getting Started

To being with, I would recommend familiarising yourselves with the [Export Tool] (http://export.hotosm.org/) and the general requirements of the [Outreachy internship] (https://www.gnome.org/outreachy/).

Please keep in mind that a minimum of 40 hrs a week must be dedicated to the program, which will be carried out remotely from the 25th May until 25th August.

The next step in the application process is to complete the items listed below and add them to your application via the Outreachy website by 24th March 2015 19:00 UTC:

https://outreachy.gnome.org

  • A short paragraph explaining why you are applying and what involvement, if you have had any, in open source projects.
  • A simple resume showing previous activities and experience. And please feel free to include work that are not necessarily open source related.
  • A draft outlining a proposed time schedule of your availability for the project, incorporating the expected 40 hrs per week from the 25th May to the 25th August.
  • The completed Export Tool Help Documentation task that is your contribution to the project.

Task

On the [Hot Exports Hompage] (http://export.hotosm.org/en) at the bottom of the page under the Expert Functions, there is a list containing the following links:

  • Preset Files
  • Tag Transform SQL Files
  • Translation Files
  • New Upload
  • Visual Tag Chooser

Select the Preset Files link, which will take you to the following [page] ( http://export.hotosm.org/en/uploads/presets). You will notice that the preset files are held here, but there is no help information.

Using your own knowledge and the information on preset files provided in the [Hot Exports Wiki] (http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/HOT_Exports), please put together a help section explaining what preset files are, what they are used for, and most importantly how they are used.

Ideally showing how preset files are used is the best way to explain, so please use screen shots of the process, similar to how the [Visual Tag Chooser] (http://visualtags.hotosm.org/) is demonstrated on its help page.
