"10 Minute Walk Through" document for Kibana version 5

Hello,

I'd like to suggest to create a "10 Minute Walk Through" document for Kibana version 5.

Let me explain why.

I already have experience using ES, but never used Kibana before. I watched Elastic{ON} 2016 videos that expain changes in branding, versions, etc. And then I decided to explore the new Kibana 5.0.0-alpha3. Looks like documentation asumes that I already have some data that I want to visualise, but actualy I don't. I started to google for "Kibana sample dataset" and I found this document:

Now I think, I'll be able to explore Kibana 5.0.0-alpha3 following the steps in Kibana 3.0 documentation, but having "10 Minute Walk Through" doc in 5.0 documentation would help a lot of new users in my opinion.

Actually I found some guidlines on how to load sample data here:

Looks like the same example from Kibana 3 with shakespeare.json is available. However there is no time based event data in shakespeare.json file and it seems it's not possible to "Configure an index pattern" and therefore start exploring Kibana 5.0 using shakespeare dataset. I'll a set of randomly generated log files (logs.jsonl.gz).

"In order to use Kibana you must configure at least one index pattern. Index patterns are used to identify the Elasticsearch index to run search and analytics against. They are also used to configure fields."

In order to configure an index pattern (and use Kibana) you must have event data to get started even if you don't plan to use Kibana for event based data (such as shakespeare dataset).

@tomasramanauskas The tutorial contains 3 data sets, not 1.

Also, for the Shakespeare and accounts data, you need to uncheck the option stating your index contains time based events, as described here: https://www.elastic.co/guide/en/kibana/5.0/tutorial-define-index.html

Two of the sample data sets, the Shakespeare plays and the financial accounts, don’t contain time-series data. Make sure the Index contains time-based events box is unchecked when you create index patterns for these data sets.

Bargs, thanks! I didn't notice this before. I checked and everything seems to be fine.
I guess, I got a bit confused when I saw 3 options (two deprecated or not recommended) and I thought that at least one must be checked.

1. Index contains time-based events
2. Use event times to create index names [DEPRECATED]
3. Do not expand index pattern when searching (Not recommended)

So this issue can be closed I guess.
