Event annotations serve as a data visualization annotation about specific events. This helps the user gain insight by overlaying key metrics and performance data with these events to understand correlations.

Capabilities

Manually created event annotations / static event annotations

  • I need to author an annotation just for my visualization
  • I need to author an annotation as a named grouping of annotations that can be added to another visualization
    • I need to visualize groupings of annotations from others in my organization (i.e. Kevin's Release Schedule dates)
  • I need to be able to link manual annotations to other relevant resources

Query-based event annotations

  • I need to visualize annotations from a query
  • I need to convert a query-based annotation into a "custom query" rule in an alert
    • I need to be able to link query-based annotations to other relevant resources
    • I need to visualize "curated" annotations that come from elsewhere in Elastic
APM Deployments, ML Annotations, ML Anomalies, Security Detections, Existing Alert Rules, ...
  • I need to be able to configure possible actions on these annotations depending on their type (e.g. muting alerts)

Looking forward to this one. It is a blocker for converting TSVB visualizations on https://elasticsearch-benchmarks.elastic.co/ to Lens.
