Looks good, thanks, and I'm not worried about any conflicts with #791 . You could update the last line of the YAML extension-definition example to some "arithmetic.int" or similar rather than just "arithmetic"....

Is backends really the right word here? Typically I think this kind of check would be done by the frontend in order to avoid making an impossible request to a backend (i.e. "run this" when the backend can't)...
