Resolves #4562.

@LHerskind: This is still a tentative proposal for this, my main questions are:

  1. Is this okay to do regarding creating a tree ? Will this cause a memory leak ? Is there a better way to do this only in memory to let gc clean everything after calling ?
  2. Is there a defined tree height for outgoing messages or will it be dynamically calculated for each block ?

Addendum:
I think it's a bit stupid what I'm doing to support calling it with blocknumber = 'latest', but I didn't want to remove it yet, would like confirmation that we only need to call it with a number, and won't need to support 'latest'

Is there a defined tree height for outgoing messages or will it be dynamically calculated for each block ?

Since the outgoing messages is per transaction, the number of transactions will change the height of the tree, this is why the heigh of the tree must also be conveyed as part of the data. Dynamic.

Benchmark results

Metrics with a significant change:

  • batch_insert_into_append_only_tree_16_depth_ms (8): 11.7 (-31%)
  • batch_insert_into_append_only_tree_16_depth_hash_ms (8): 0.499 (-31%)
  • note_successful_decrypting_time_in_ms (32): 472 (-16%)
  • note_trial_decrypting_time_in_ms (8): 53.1 (+238%)
Detailed results

All benchmarks are run on txs on the Benchmarking contract on the repository. Each tx consists of a batch call to create_note and increment_balance, which guarantees that each tx has a private call, a nested private call, a public call, and a nested public call, as well as an emitted private note, an unencrypted log, and public storage read and write.

This benchmark source data is available in JSON format on S3 here.

Values are compared against data from master at commit 77954ab5 and shown if the difference exceeds 1%.

Creating a new issue to figure out an interaction guaranteeing transactions make it in a specific block, or in the same block together. This is to address the case of different transactions not being put in the same block, even when run as a concurrent call, thus not allowing for testing a full tree (or even messages > max number of L1 -> L2 messages per tx) as right now putting in more than 1 transaction per block is doable on local, but not on CI.
