Benchmark results

Metrics with a significant change:

  • note_successful_decrypting_time_in_ms (8): 361 (+22%)
Detailed results

All benchmarks are run on txs on the Benchmarking contract on the repository. Each tx consists of a batch call to create_note and increment_balance, which guarantees that each tx has a private call, a nested private call, a public call, and a nested public call, as well as an emitted private note, an unencrypted log, and public storage read and write.

This benchmark source data is available in JSON format on S3 here.

Values are compared against data from master at commit ea840857 and shown if the difference exceeds 1%.

Hi Jean. Great work on getting a VM working with witness gen + comprehensive tests. I've left a few comments, but in general this looks like a very solid base to build off of 👍

this is a comment about line 503: internal_call

are we supporting a JMP instruction? If so this opens up a potential issue regarding call stack manipulation.

e.g. function A calls B which calls C.

If C unconditionally jumps back into B, then when B returns, the return destination pulled off of the call stack will still contain the return details for call B->C, not A->B

I don't know if this is something to address as it requires the program writer to do some very stupid things to trigger this case, but it might be worth discussing + making an issue about?

@Maddiaa0 This is about some of your code. Would you like to handle this?

// u8 addition
alu_u8_tag * alu_op_add * (alu_u8_r0 + alu_cf * 2**8 - alu_ia - alu_ib) = 0;
#[ALU_ADDITION_OUT_U8]

ia and ib are constrained to be u8 elsewhere via load from a memory region, however, however i assume ic will be written to a memory region, how can we ensure that it is a u8?

Ic can be larger than a u8 without setting the carry?

alu_u8_r0 will have to be constrained for being a 8-bit register.
The relation #[ALU_ADDITION_OUT_U8] ensures that if selectors alu_u8_tag and alu_op_add are enabled, it inplies that alu_ic = alu_u8_r0 modulo finite field size. Since this modulo is much larger than 8 bits, alu_ic will have 8-bit as well.

(alu_op_add + alu_op_sub) * (sum_128 - alu_ia + alu_ff_tag * alu_ic) + (alu_op_add - alu_op_sub) * (alu_cf * 2**128 - alu_ib) = 0;

This assumes { alu_u8_tag, alu_u16_tag, alu_u32_tag, alu_u64_tag, alu_u128_tag } are mutually exclusive?

alu_u8_tag + alu_u16_tag + alu_u32_tag + alu_u64_tag + alu_u128_tag - 1 * (alu_u8_tag * alu_u16_tag * alu_u32_tag * alu_u64_tag * alu_u128_tag ) = 0

Would perform this check right? but the degree here is very high, is this to be done later?

Exactly! There is already a TODO in the PIL file about ensuring the mutual exclusion. One potential idea is to use pre-defined lookup which flattens a tag value from the main trace into the flags. This lookup is part of AVM code and would ensure this guarantee. Clearly this is work to be done.

You can see the relavant TODOs here:
https://github.com/AztecProtocol/aztec-packages/blob/jm/3738-arithmetic-non-ff/barretenberg/cpp/pil/avm/alu_chip.pil#L66-L68

Do we need to make sure that no other selectors can be set on the row after when alu_u128_tag is set?

Good input. I also thought about it and came to the conclusion that any wrongly added selectors would add a relation and would probably "over-constrain" the trace.
In other words, one would only become stricter.
