Maximum HiDPI Resolution on LG 40WP95C (Ultrawide) 5K2K

Hi,

I have an LG 40WP95C (Ultrawide) which is a 40inch 5K2K monitor. The native resolution of the monitor is 5120x2160 which is very small for macOS UI. The highest HiDPI resolution that BetterDisplay shows in "Set Resolution" menu is 3072x1296.

I've bought the Pro license and tried the steps in the README by enabling Set up native smooth resolution scaling and Add a near-native HiDPI variant for the native resolution. I've also added custom resolutions like 4608x1944, but these custom resolutions don't show up in HiDPI section. Why can't I get a HiDPI resolution better than 3072x1296? Is there a way to get higher HiDPI resolutions natively (non-Dummy) with this monitor?

Hi there - for entry level M1 and M2 systems the horizontal framebuffer resolution is limited at 6K (which is 3K HiDPI). For M1 Pro/Max/Ultra it is 8K (4K HiDPI). If you want higher HiDPI resolution than these, you need to use the dummy mirroring method. :(

hey @waydabber! I'm checking in again since the M4 chips were just released, sounds like we might possibly be able to finally achieve the higher HiDPI resolutions now! Based off of this MacRumors article: https://www.macrumors.com/2024/10/28/10-core-m4-imac-supports-8k-display-at-120hz/

Yes, it seems like the entry level M4 Macs will now be able to go beyond 6K and do 8K which is great. Seems to be true for the mini as well. However the 8K@120Hz was probably a typo as both the mini and iMac's tech specs are talking about 8K@60Hz only.

yeah, the article was updated to say it's only 60Hz, but still, this is fantastic news! I've been waiting for this for over a year! I assume that on your end, not much updating will need to be done to support those new resolutions? since it'll just determine that from what the system reports is the maximum supported resolutions?

@waydabber based on the tech specs, it seems there isn't a difference between the M4 and M4 Pro in terms of HiDPI? They both cap at 8K so wouldn't be able to do HiDPI on an ultrawide or super ultrawide (I'm thinking in terms of 5120 x 1440). Is that right?
