Spring 2024 updates to MRCE project direction and status (#295)
Browse files Browse the repository at this point in the history
I updated our Roadmap and wanted to get your feedback for this next
year. If needed, when you review the changes, look for a way to view the
next in a Preview mode so you can see the formatted version.

Please let me know what you think for our next year. I know we have
discussed UI changes, some new contests, a generic contest, some further
design changes to make it easier to add contests, etc.

## Roadmap
Below is a high-level overview of project activities over the next year.

> *Note - My involvement will be limited over the next 6-9 months due to ongoing family commitments. I will keep up on discussions and encourage others to continue development as they can. If bugs are found, I'll work to get them fixed and released. Thank you, Mike W7SST.*
### Roadmap - Now, Next, and Future

#### Now - Winter 2023 (Jan-Mar)
#### Now - Winter 2024 (Jan-Mar)
Projects we are currently working on...
- [ ] **Developer on-boarding** - Help other developers get up to speed with compiling and pushing to the project.

- [x] **Add a few more contests** - Implement one or two more popular contests based on community input, including the IARU HF Championship Contest.
- [x] Add IARU HF Contest
- [x] Improve CQ WPX Contest
- [x] Focus on quality
- [ ] Wrap up the 1.84 release by the end of March 2024.

- [x] **Add K1USN Slow Speed Contest (SST)** - The CWOPS Community has reached out and expressed interest in using MRCE as one of their recommended training tools for their CW classes.
Farnsworth CW timing support will be implemented for this contest only.
#### Next - Spring 2024 (Apr-Jun)
Projects that we'll work on next (as time permits...)

- [x] **Add JARL All Japan and ACAG contests** - These contests are being implemented by JR8PPG. Thank you!
- [ ] **Redefine our strategy moving forward** - Originally, we had hoped additional developers would step forward and join actual coding efforts.
We currently have a core group of advocates that are providing awesome project direction and insight and we appreciate their involvement and efforts.
However, we do need to slow down and consider what the next steps will be given limited developer resources.
There has been some preliminary work on a GUI redesign and several contests have been suggested.
We will start discussions amoungst the core development group on how to proceed.

- [x] **Focus on Quality** - We will try to address some of the quality issues that have been reported.
- [ ] **ARRL Field Day support announcement** - We would like to figure out how to announce MRCE's support for ARRL Field Day.
This contest was the main focus from two years ago and we want to be sure that users are aware of this training opportunity in time for FD 2024.

- [x] Target v1.83 release before March 31.
- [ ] **Focus on Quality** - Address important quality issues as they are reported.

[other MR branches](#morse-runner-release-history) into the main release branch.
Our initial focus will be F6FVY and N2IC changes, including bandwidth adjustment using mouse wheel and F7-key handling improvements.

- [ ] **ARRL Sweepstakes Contest development** - As time permits, continue development work on ARRL Sweepstakes CW Contest.
This contest has a complex exchange, so the implementation is taking longer than expected.

- [ ] **Maintain existing integration with N1MM and DxLog.**
N2IC has done work to integrate Morse Runner within N1MM and DxLog.
We want to continue this work to allow Morse Runner to run with these
popular logging programs.

- [ ] **GUI Enhancements** - The team will evaluate the GUI for ergonomic enhancements.
- [ ] **Additional contests** - Based on community input, we will consider adding a few more contests for the fall contesting season.

setups on individual computers and git setups.
