Implications of WebVTT flash metadata proposal.

The media and Entertainment Interest Group notes the WebVTT general time-coded flash metadata proposal, intended to allow user agents to suppress flashing content.

Note that this is not the same as automatic detection and mitigation of flashing content, as discussed previously by the RQTF.

Hi Jason. Long time… Lisbon, IIRC. I submitted the referenced issue, and I'd be happy to join a future MAUR call to discuss.

Two items are worthy of mentioning here.

• First, we may have a TPAC breakout to hammer down the specifics of a proposed VTT metadata block format. My goals are to make sure it remains simple while allowing for future expansion. Details of that progress and potential TPAC breakout in the prequisite issue, VTT Metadata Cue format is ambiguous; some metadata may be unintentionally presented to the user in a context outside HTML webvtt#511
• Second, since you mentioned "this is not the same as automatic detection" it's worth noting that Apple has shipped a feature called Dim Flashing Lights that accounts for automatic detection and mitigation, but we can only do so on Apple hardware. One goal of proposing the aforementioned issues to to make similar benefits available on other platforms.

I’d prefer to keep this concrete VTT proposal separate from a general APA meeting. Neither Eric nor I am in APA, and I don’t know what’s on their agenda, but it doesn’t include this.

I haven't heard about this being on the APA schedule yet, but we will be discussing the prerequisite metadata issue Tuesday @ 14:30 CET in the TTWG meeting.
