Search bar design could be improved

Right now it displays on desktop as:

Would propose removing the white "search" text and replacing this with a longer bar that is (1) better centered and (2) has the grey placeholder text "Search"

I believe this will be cleaner. @francespoblete may have other suggestions for improvements beyond that

I implemented these suggestions, so I'm closing this issue to note the current status, but feel free to reopen when you see it upon publishing, if there's more to do.
