18Texas uses the core structure of 1851 by Chris Lawson and Mark Derrick. The design goal for 18Texas is to reimplement the basic incremental capitalization gameplay of 1851. Some gameplay differences are incorporated to align with recent games.

Private Companies

  • The private companies are auctioned. Players cannot sell them and they close on Phase 5. Only use private companies up to the number of players. P3 comes with a president’s certificate of a random company. P4 and P5 come with a single certificate of that same company.

During a player's turn, they must place a bid (multiples of 5, minimum is face value) on any of the items. On subsequent turns, if they are already winning a bid, they must pass. The auction ends when all items have received a bid. Each player will leave the auction with exactly one item.

The tile laying and teleport abilities are available to use by their president on behalf of the company for which they are president from Phase 3.

  • P1 blocks its hex until Phase 5
  • P4 blocks its hexes and provides extra tile lays with #8 and #9 tiles. P4 tiles must connect to each other and both must be laid.
  • P2/P5 provide the teleport ability. The tile must be laid and then the token may optionally be laid.

Stock Rounds

  • Incremental capitalization, 50% to float.
  • Companies pay a token fee upon float (no token placement fee). Place home token upon float.
  • Company’s share value moves vertically up upon float.
  • Sell then buy, always at the current market value.
  • No sales until the company has completed an operating round (sales or share issue).

Operating Rounds

  • From Phase 3, a company may lay two yellow tiles or one upgrade.
  • Trains discarded from companies over the train limit are removed from the game.
  • Last step in operation is to redeem or issue shares (redeem limit up to 50%)

End of Game

  • Bankruptcy
  • End of OR set after bank break
  • None
  • None
  • The $60 terrain fee for Dallas/Forth Worth is occluded behind the city label.
