Current osm-carto depends on pretty new CartoCSS and Mapnik versions, so I just bumped TileMill dependencies and now I'm able to open osm-carto v4.5.0+ (git repo) on Ubuntu 17.10 with standard nodejs+npm packages:
However
project.mmlhas been heavily altered after I made a single change, so this might be not enough to make it really work.
