Does this help?

Surge is a plugin synth, not a standalone program. To run it you need a DAW (digital audio workstation) or other host that can support VST3 or (on mac) AudioUnit plugins. If you do not have a host program you will not be able to run surge.

There are a variety of free and paid hosts that work. Cubase, Reaper, Live, Logic, Bitwig, and Fruity Loops are among the popular paid hosts and many are multi-platform. For free hosts: on Linux Ardour and Carla are popular free hosts. On mac GarageBand works with surge, Hosting AU is a free light AU wrapper which can run surge. On Windows SaviHost is a free wrapper. But there are many more - this list is illustrative not exhaustive.

Hi Oliver. Haven't heard from you. Hope this helped. I'm going to close the issue but feel free to open it again or join us on our discord in the #help channel if still stuck.
