On many new distros libusb-1.0 has been replaced by the maintained libusbx. As far as stlink is concerned they are drop in compatible, but this might want to be reflected in the readme.

I've just read the link you posted and noticed this on the libusbx project page:

libusbx was a fork of libusb, a library that provides generic access to USB devices.
As of 2014.01.26, this project has been fully merged back into libusb and is being discontinued.
Since there will be no further releases of libusbx, you are strongly encouraged to switch to using libusb.

That what I get for operating from memory. I expect that we will be seeing libusbx for most distros for at least the next 6mo. In the most recent Fedora for instance you have:

libusb.x86_64 1:0.1.5-2.fc20
libusbx.x86_64 1.0.16-3.fc20

There was a libusb1 package that was replaced by the libusbx in F18. I don't have a strong opinion on this just thought I would make the note as I was going through and rebuilding some of my dev tools on a new box.
