Autocomplete is not working #5782

Description

In the last version of Anaconda 3, for windows 64 the Spyder autocomplete function is not working at all.
What steps will reproduce the problem?

Install Anaconda
Open Spyder e try autocomplete

enum must not be installed in Python 3.4 or higher, but some package is bringing it as a dependency in Python 3.6. I think that's messing with our completion machinery and breaking it completely.

Issue with AutoCompletion feature in Spyder

Hi @ccordoba12 (Carlos), Here is my system configuration:

I have Spyder (3.3.3) with python 3.7.3 64-bit | Qt 5.9.6 | PyQt5 5.9.2 | Windows 10 64-bit and am not able to use the Autocompletion feature in my Spyder. Also the Help window does not show for most of the simple commands (with Ctl+i) and it works only for few.

There is no enum package/module in it. Could you please suggest a solution for this.

@PraveenTumma If this is the case, then help retrival is working from Spyder's end, but some objects (builtin functions, some pandas and numpy functions, methods, etc) either don't have docstrings or it is not easily possible to retrieve them due to being compiled C++ code, or other structural/package differences. However, the situation is substantially improved, to an extent possible, in Spyder 4 Beta 2.

You could try e.g. conda update spyder spyder-kernels jedi parso rope sphinx in the Anaconda prompt and see if the situation improves any. Other than that, Spyder 4 Beta 2 was just released with a preliminary version of the new completion architecture; you can try installing it (in a separate environment from your current Spyder 3 install and test it out to see if it resolves your problem; we'll have a blog post out soon with more detailed instructions on that shortly.

I'm still seeing autocompletion failure in the Editor for Spyder 4.0.0b2. This is accompanied with failure of hover hints, go to definition, and code analysis (pyflakes). These stop performing as well. The code analysis, for example indicates "invalid syntax" when syntax is valid and runs properly.

Unfortunately, I have not yet been able to pin down the circumstances that cause the problem. Restarting Spyder certainly restores proper behavior, but I cannot cause the behavior by sleeping my machine. The misbehavior manifests even while actively using Spyder.

I will try to better determine the circumstances under which misbehavior starts.

@mrclary I had this occur often as well, and I isolated the circumstances to having multiple Spyder instances running at once. Was this the case for you, by any chance?

@CAM-Gerlach no, this does not correlate with my experience. I've just tested several conditions:

works after "f5"ing several times
works after manually sleeping computer
works after 10min inactivity (auto sleep)
works after 1hr inactivity (auto sleep)
works after "f5"ing with deliberate syntax error
works after starting second instance of Spyder (4.0.0b2)

All did not manifest the misbehavior. It seems that this problem is self-aware and is avoiding detection. It will wait until I have to do real work then decide to reveal itself :-)

I'm having the exact same issues as @mrclary. The 4.0.0b2 update does not fix autocomplete or ctrl+I for information. I'll be checking out the provisional solutions he posted and will update soon.

I don't know if this is related or not, but I've been running Spyder in debug mode and dumping the log stream to file for about a week now and haven't seen any issues with command completion or introspection. However, just moments ago Spyder launched the issue reporter when I attempted a tab completion. Following is the captured traceback and the relevant logging output.
