markers are cleared when changing linking

Currently changing linking will clear any existing markers (and remove them from the data collection).  See #1742 (comment)

Should markers adopt the WCS from the reference data (or be required to pass the data label of an existing data entry to adopt) so that they can react to changes in linking?
