This will be the last release in the v3 major version of this library. The high-level goal is to deprecate all parts of the API that we intend to make breaking changes to in v4.

For each deprecated API, we should begin to compile migration steps in order to produce a v3 to v4 migration guide.

New features that are already implemented can also land in this release, but the priority will be to ship this soon, so we do not intend to wait for development of any new features.

UPDATE: due to unforeseen issues with dependencies which have dropped support for older node versions, the due date has been adjusted.
