In the meantime, I've developed a workaround in the form of a Maven plugin: https://github.com/seart-group/git-submodule-maven-plugin. I've integrated it into one of my other projects and found that it works quite well. |

I would love to use this action in one of my projects but I need support for automatically cloning submodules on checkout.
