Hi there 👋, my name is Romain (or Roman)

I am an Analytical Chemistry Engineer from Lille (Northern France) next to the Belgian border.

Nevertheless, I am also in fond of Computering ( and Computing or Computerizing as well !!!)

Maybe one day, I will retrain as a Linux Back End Developper (or maybe it's just a dream !)

As a R&D Engineer who grew up during the 90', computer became a powerful everyday tool during my studies but especially during my past professional experiences.

Performing complex matrix calculations or just writing reports would have been a pain if done manually ! That's why I think it would have been very difficult to live without since my first desktop on MS Windows 95.

15 years ago, one of my friend introduced me to the Debian distros universe and it was quite a revolution for me. I was already very enthusiastic about the Open-Source and one day, now 10 years ago, I decided to quit using proprietary softwares and OS to focus on free alternatives.

I do not have computer sciences background but I spent a lot of time reading on forums about system administration and optimization, new projects and new languages. Long time ago, I tried to learn Java but I changed my mind when I discovered Python (it was still python2 at this time then came python3 few months later).

5 years ago, my former girlfriend, who was not used to a linux distro, had big troubles to start the VPN app (which had to be set up in command line) in order to watch the Belgian TV. This was the time to learn how to create desktop app to activate the VPN or shut it down. Just a text file with a script and a picture then you click and it's a kind of magic !

Nowadays, I am still learning and I also developed a strong passion for shell scripting. I've seen the many improvements the Linux community have done since the last 10 years and when I think of the hundred millions of computers which can not be upgraded to Win 11 next year, there might be an opportunity for the open source community to seize.

Don't you think ?

  • 🤔 Always looking for improvements : I am a complete autodidact so if you notice errors or have suggestions, it would be a pleasure for me to discuss with a pro !

  • 📫 How to reach me: [email protected]

  • 🔭 I'm currently working on many projects about sciences and customized computer setup but I particulary enjoy refurbishing antiques (see Fun fact 1 !).

  • ⚡ Fun fact1: My oldest laptop home was initially running Windows 2000 and it still works on Debian today. Moreover, it will be 22 on January 23th 2025 which means it is already old enough to buy alcohol in the US 😄 !

  • ⚡ Fun fact2: While teaching beginners how to use Ubuntu and other distros, the older are the hardest to convince at first but also the most grateful and happy afterwards ! One of my 70 years old student asked me several times if I was sure it was free to use because he found it much better and quicker than Windows 10 !

  • 💬 Question for everyone (including me): Sometimes, I wonder wether the greatest motivation come from a balanced combination between passion, obsession and above all laziness ???

With Kind Regards, Bien à Vous, Met Vriendelijke Groeten, Roman
