the wheel presumably created by the work done in #100 causes import errors on debian wheezy running cpython 2.7.3.

That's very unfortunate, but it is the direct result of Python 2.7.4+ breaking binary compatibility in trashcan APIs, and for good reason (http://bugs.python.org/issue13992 if I'm not mistaken, found it via Python changelog). I'm not sure what I can do, since compiling on Python 2.7.3 makes greenlet unsafe, and compiling on 2.7.4+ makes it stop working on 2.7.3.

Perhaps debian could backport trashcan changes to 2.7.3?

I think you can work it around by using pip install --no-binary all greenlet.

ifundef commented Apr 4, 2016

yes, --no-binary :all: works, but greenlet is a third-order dependency installed by pip install --requirement requirements.txt (and unfortunately disables bdist_wheel which removes the possibility of wheel caching when built locally).

researching how to apply --no-binary by way of a requirements file to a single package (or if it is even possible).

UPDATE1: maybe --no-binary greenlet?

UPDATE2: yeah, it works...

UPDATE3: adding --no-binary greenlet to a requirements file also works.

After some more thinking I pulled manylinux1 wheels for greenlet 0.4.9, since uploading them in the first place was a big mistake. I will bring them back in greenlet 0.4.10.

Not really. The only thing stopping me right now is the need to build Windows binaries for so many Python versions, which requires a lot of Pythons and Visual Studios installed, and since I haven't used Windows at all for the last two years my last laptop has none of that at the moment.

I have a very old laptop that had all the necessary setup, but stars need to collide when I'm at my old place and actually want to do any meaningful work. There's a good chance that stars WILL collide next week, so thanks for the reminder! :)

Based on the commits on master there seemed to be no changes since the 0.4.9 release. Wouldn't you be able to just upload the same wheels for 0.4.10 but also include a manylinux wheel?

Thanks for your work btw 👍

I have successfully used AppVeyor both as a CI and as a wheel building
service, since they keep the built artifacts. Have a look!

Wow, thank you for the suggestion! Found the python-appveyor-demo project and it seems to be exactly what I needed. Way better than relying on some old laptop!

Hi, sorry if I'm hijacking the thread but there seems to be some problems with running 0.4.10 on Python 2.7.3.

I noticed this the hard way after when running gunicorn with gevent just now. gevent does not seem to pin the version of greenlet they are using, instead they go with greenlet >= 0.4.9, well this installed 0.4.10, and when I try to import gevent I get the same import error as @ifundef got: ... undefined symbol: _PyTrash_thread_deposit_object. I tried installing just greenlet 0.4.10 (in a virtualenv v.15.0.2) and importing greenlet directly gives me the same error. 0.4.9 works just fine.

The reason for running on Python 2.7.3 is Debian Wheezy is stuck on this version.

The reason for running on Python 2.7.3 is Debian Wheezy is stuck on this version.

Python 2.7.3 is 4 years old and Python 2.7.4 knowingly changed to thread-safe trashcan ABI, with a known side effect of extensions compiled on 2.7.4+ not loadable on 2.7.3, see: https://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-checkins/2012-September/115893.html

Since official docker containers for building manylinux1 wheels use the latest version of Python it's a lot less easy to provide manylinux1 wheels built with older versions of Python. Besides, using an old thread-unsafe version of trashcan does not sound compelling.

To be honest greenlet could probably get away with not using trashcan at all. I just did a quick test and custom attributes already (indirectly) use trashcan, since they are stored in an internal dict. But very long chains of parent attributes do not, however I couldn't even construct a chain of 1 million of them in a reasonable time, since the process practically crawls to a halt at around ~100k of them (which is not surprising given it's O(n^2) complexity). Thus it's probably safe to assume nobody uses such long chains of greenlets in reality, but you never know. :(

balloob commented Jun 15, 2016

You can pip install greenlet 0.4.9 before installing gevent and pip should not have to install 0.4.10

@frwickst

@balloob: Yes, this was my solution to the problem as well but I really think that Gevent should start pinning to versions instead of using >=, as this would also catch new major versions.

Not sure I understand this, since I see this:

…opagate to another greenlet and corrupt memory

Hello up there. While working on Pygolang I've faced the following
problem: a C++ exception thrown in one greenlet, without any try/catch
block on that greenlet, might become propagated and "handled" by
try/catch block established at another greenlet that happened to switch to
the greenlet in question. "Handled" comes in quotes because the program
usually segfaults after that.

I've also observed segfaults before exception reaches user-level
try/catch block - internally in __cxa_throw. Both this issues are likely
of the same origin - due to the fact that C-level stack of a greenlet
does not start from scratch and starts from C-level stack of the program
state when the greenlet is switched to the first time.

We already have one test for C++ exception handling in test_cpp that
@snaury initially added in d9cb12a. However in that test all greenlets
that throw C++ exceptions also put try/catch at the top of their
C-stack.

In the problem, that I describe, and that added test reproduces, there is
no intended top-level try/catch block in C-stack of the greenlet in
question that throws. As the test shows the exception becomes propagated
to switcher's greenlet context and the program then dies with SIGSEGV:

    test_exception_switch_and_throw (greenlet.tests.test_cpp.CPPTests) ... terminate called after throwing an instance of 'exception_t'
    C++ exception unexpectedly caught in g1 <-- NOTE

        (ret, sig, " (core dumped)" if core else ""))
    AssertionError: failed with ret=0 sig=11 (core dumped)

The C-level backtrace from the dumped core is attached in Appendix I. There the
program dies somehow after running the code from _test_extension_cpp.cpp
module. However with the following dirty-patch the situation becomes more clear:

    --- a/src/greenlet/tests/_test_extension_cpp.cpp
    +++ b/src/greenlet/tests/_test_extension_cpp.cpp

         if (!PyArg_ParseTuple(args, ""))
             return NULL;
         p_test_exception_throw(0);

    ...

The problem might be worked-around with putting try/catch on C-stack for
every greenlet, but a more proper fix would be to unlink return address
and C-stack-frame of created greenlet from other greenlets completely
(i.e. rewrite first frame of C-stack for created greenlet to return to NULL).

Thanks beforehand,
Kirill

P.S. The problem described at
  python-greenlet#197 (comment) and
  python-greenlet#205 might be related
  to hereby issue (/cc @ThePrez, @kadler, @jamadden).

P.P.S. The test does not fail on master. I see there @jamadden switched
  the codebase to C++ almost completely and there is some explicit
  attempts to save/restore exception state added in
  python-greenlet@87edf955. However
  that exception save/restore is specific to Win32 and the test succeeds
  for me on Linux. I still see the following comment in
  UserGreenlet::inner_bootstrap

    // C++ exceptions cannot propagate to the parent greenlet from
    // here. (TODO: Do we need a catch(...) clause, perhaps on the
    // function itself? ALl we could do is terminate the program.)

    ( https://github.com/python-greenlet/greenlet/blob/3e534d6b/src/greenlet/greenlet.cpp#L1085-L1104 )

  probably this indeed works only by luck, or due to G_NOEXCEPT modifier
  of UserGreenlet::inner_bootstrap upon seeing which __cxa_throw stops
  unwinding C-stack and just calls std::terminate.

    FAIL

    ======================================================================

        (ret, sig, " (core dumped)" if core else ""))
    AssertionError: failed with ret=0 sig=11 (core dumped)

The C-level backtrace from the dumped core is attached in Appendix I. There the
program dies somehow after running the code from _test_extension_cpp.cpp
module. However with the following dirty-patch the situation becomes more clear:

    --- a/src/greenlet/tests/_test_extension_cpp.cpp
    +++ b/src/greenlet/tests/_test_extension_cpp.cpp

         if (!PyArg_ParseTuple(args, ""))
             return NULL;
         p_test_exception_throw(0);

The C-level backtrace of this abort when, run from under g2, shows that g2
C-stack starts from what was there before for first greenlet with try/catch block:

The problem might be worked-around with putting try/catch on C-stack for
every greenlet, but a more proper fix would be to unlink return address
and C-stack-frame of created greenlet from other greenlets completely
(i.e. rewrite first frame of C-stack for created greenlet to return to NULL).

Thanks beforehand,
Kirill

P.S. The problem described at
  #197 (comment) and
  #205 might be related
  to hereby issue (/cc @ThePrez, @kadler, @jamadden).

P.P.S. The test does not fail on master. I see there @jamadden switched
  the codebase to C++ almost completely and there is some explicit
  attempts to save/restore exception state added in
  87edf955. However
  that exception save/restore is specific to Win32 and the test succeeds
  for me on Linux. I still see the following comment in
  UserGreenlet::inner_bootstrap

    // C++ exceptions cannot propagate to the parent greenlet from
    // here. (TODO: Do we need a catch(...) clause, perhaps on the
    // function itself? ALl we could do is terminate the program.)

    ( https://github.com/python-greenlet/greenlet/blob/3e534d6b/src/greenlet/greenlet.cpp#L1085-L1104 )

  probably this indeed works only by luck, or due to G_NOEXCEPT modifier
  of UserGreenlet::inner_bootstrap upon seeing which __cxa_throw stops
  unwinding C-stack and just calls std::terminate.
