I am trying to get the text from a pdf written in French. I am having trouble with some symbols from the text (é. û, ç, etc).
I am reading the documentation of the function extractText() and I see it says "This works well for some PDF files, but poorly for others, depending on the generator used." so I don't know if the poor behaviour I am getting is because of the lack of choosing a generator.

I am using the next piece of code:

from PyPDF2 import PdfFileReader

reader = PdfFileReader("example.pdf")
page = reader.getPage(2)
page.extractText()

Should I choose a generator in any part of my code or this is normal behaviour for certain pdfs?

Thank-you in advance.

Hello,
you have to put #coding: utf-8 in the begging of your script.

i don't know if you can extract this character "œ", because i can't extract with using the same method !!

Could you be more explicit? In which line of the code are you referring to?

#coding: utf-8
from PyPDF2 import PdfFileReader

reader = PdfFileReader("example.pdf")
page = reader.getPage(2)
page.extractText()

#924 probably fixed this. I'll make a release today. Please let me know if you still encounter this issue with PyPDF2==2.1.0.

The highlight of the 2.1.0 release is the most massive improvement to the
text extraction capabilities of PyPDF2 since 2016 🥳🎊 A very big thank you goes
to [pubpub-zz](https://github.com/pubpub-zz) who took a lot of time and
knowledge about the PDF format to finally get those improvements into PyPDF2.
Thank you 🤗💚

In case the new function causes any issues, you can use `_extract_text_old`
for the old functionality. Please also open a bug ticket in that case.

There were several people who have attempted to bring similar improvements to
PyPDF2. All of those were valuable. The main reason why they didn't get merged
is the big amount of open PRs / issues. pubpub-zz was the most comprehensive
PR which also incorporated the latest changes of PyPDF2 2.0.0.

Thank you to [VictorCarlquist](https://github.com/VictorCarlquist) for #858 and
[asabramo](https://github.com/asabramo) for #464 🤗
