This doc describes a quickstart to running the basic Zipkin/Finatra service, with everything running on one machine
It presumes you have a clean-ish Centos 6 install, and a user with sudo capabilities (eg user is in wheel group and wheel group is allowed in /etc/sudoers)

This includes building Zipkin from the current master branch from Github.

--------------------------------
Groundwork - perform this as ROOT
--------------------------------

1. Add the Datastax REPO, from http://www.datastax.com/docs/1.1/install/install_rpm

vi /etc/yum.repos.d/datastax.repo

8<---------8<---------8<---------8<---------8<---------8<---------
[datastax]
name= DataStax Repo for Apache Cassandra
baseurl=http://rpm.datastax.com/community
enabled=1
gpgcheck=0
8<---------8<---------8<---------8<---------8<---------8<---------

2. Install Cassandra
yum install dsc1.1

3. Add the Cloudera Repo

cd /etc/yum.repos.d/
wget http://archive.cloudera.com/cdh4/redhat/6/x86_64/cdh/cloudera-cdh4.repo

4. Install Zookeeper
yum install zookeeper-server

5. Install Java 7 JDK

Download RPM from: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk-7u3-download-1501626.html

6. Install Java RPM:
rpm -i jdk-7u3-linux-x64.rpm

7. Set Sun JVM as the operative JVM

alternatives --install /usr/bin/java java /usr/java/jdk1.7.0_03/bin/java 20000
alternatives --set java /usr/java/jdk1.7.0_03/bin/java

8. Add Casssandra to the startup system, then start it
chkconfig --add cassandra
service cassandra start

9. Initialise Zookeeper install (different if you are doing a multi node cluster)
/etc/init.d/zookeeper-server init
/sbin/service zookeeper-server start
See: https://ccp.cloudera.com/display/CDH4DOC/ZooKeeper+Installation#ZooKeeperInstallation-InstallingtheZooKeeperPackages

10. Install GIT
yum install git

11. Install screen
yum install screen

12. Disable IPtables (WARNING - THIS IS A SECURITY RISK IF YOU ARE NOT IN A CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT)

service iptables stop
chkconfig iptables off

--------------------------------
Zipkin time - perform as your user (glynd in my case)
--------------------------------

13. Obtain Zipkin

cd
mkdir github
cd github

Follow instructions from: https://github.com/twitter/zipkin/

git clone https://github.com/twitter/zipkin.git

14. Become root / sudo to stop zookeeper (otherwise the zipkin tests fail)

sudo service zookeeper-server stop

15. Build Zipkin

cd zipkin
bin/sbt update package-dist

Note: This can take a while, and also relies on certain mirrors being up to provide required libraries

16. Restart zookeeper (assuming build was successful)

sudo service zookeeper-server start

17. Create somewhere to install to:

sudo mkdir /usr/local/zipkin
sudo chown **MYUSERNAME** /usr/local/zipkin

18. Expand out the required components (here collector, query and finatra)
unzip -d /usr/local/zipkin/zipkin-server zipkin-server/dist/zipkin-server.zip
unzip -d /usr/local/zipkin/zipkin-scribe zipkin-scribe/dist/zipkin-scribe.zip
unzip -d /usr/local/zipkin/zipkin-finatra zipkin-finatra/dist/zipkin-finatra.zip

19. Set scripts to be executable...
cd /usr/local/zipkin/
chmod +x zipkin-server/scripts/*
chmod +x zipkin-scribe/scripts/*
chmod +x zipkin-finatra/scripts/*

20. Run it up!

zipkin-server/scripts/query.sh -f zipkin-server/config/query-dev.scala &
zipkin-scribe/scripts/collector.sh -f zipkin-scribe/config/collector-dev.scala &
zipkin-finatra/scripts/finatra.sh -f zipkin-finatra/config/web-localhost.scala &
