Make sure notifications defaults to alpha1 qualifier

The backend tests seem to be failing in the GitHub Actions because the creation and update time in the Event docs are slightly off even though they should be generated from the same Instant object. These tests don't fail locally. Will need to look into it later. Approving for now.
