I'd actually say having separate code for this for node and browser is unnecessary and instead of keeping the separation in yet another package bloat it'd be better to only have the [currently] browser version of the code? Looking at it:

    : typeof self === 'object'
    ? self
    : typeof window === 'object'
    ? window
    : typeof global === 'object'
    ? global
    : ({} as typeof globalThis);

• globalThis was added in node v12, current otel's minimum supported is 14; and exists in most currently relevant browsers
• self and window covers anyone trying to use it in an older browsers
• global if someone's really trying hard to run it on a really old node version
• and if any of these aren't defined, typeof asd doesn't throw so that's fine too
