Isn't this, like, exactly what the Filesystem API spec is/was all about (providing a way to store arbitrary blobs in a domain-sandboxed location)?

Link to the API spec in question - and I guess the real answer to my initial question is "it'd be great, if anybody was even considering bothering to implement it yet."

BTW Mozilla makedrive actually does do a pretty decent job of reimplementing fs on top of IndexedDB.
