The inclusion of the asterisk may be a copy-paste holdover from mutation
syntax where * means a stop codon?
These are now supported by Auspice as of my util/getGenotype.js work.

I walked through this with @jameshadfield last week as part of nextstrain/auspice#681. It works and auspice now supports underscores and hypens in gene names, so I'm merging this now.
