About the PR

Added a new salvage ship called the Osprey.

Birds are natures spaceships kind of. Unfortunately, there aren't any salvage ships designed after birds. Technically there is the kestrel but it is a bird in name only (it's just a triangle). So I have (hopefully) added the third medium-sized bird inspired shuttle to frontier sector.

Any feedback on the ship would be appreciated.

Why / Balance

The Osprey is a medium sized shuttle meant for salvaging/mining, maybe some cargo, it has the space. There is enough salvaging equipment for four salvagers (including the Captain/QM) and one pilot. It has secret rooms for smuggling that don't get used that much, because most buyers don't know about them. They are really just there to complete the wing shape.

Features:

General:

  • Great maneuvering.
  • Break room with lots of games and music
  • Shutters in the bridge, QM's room, and break room for some privacy.
  • Crew monitor and power monitoring console.
  • Hidden rooms for smuggling extra storage.

Cargo bay:

  • Just a pretty big cargo bay in general.
  • Starboard and port blast doors for easy access to the cargo bay.
  • Conveyors going to the dock for loading and unloading.
  • Ore processor and salvage techfab.
  • ATM for paying employees or trying to bribe the NFSD after they caught you smuggling.

Captain/Quartermaster's Quarters:

  • Hardsuit and tools.
  • Premium cigars.
  • Cozy atmosphere.
  • Dresser with quartermaster clothing.
  • Remote signaler for the cargo bay doors.

Some numbers:

  • Size: 31 x 27
  • Tile Count: 561
  • Cost: 70000 (~61000 + 15%)

How to test

Load up the game and buy the ship.

Hello!

I had just made a nice cup of coffee so I thought it'd be nice to walk through a shuttle. I'm a simple contributor and community member who wanted to take a look : ) so take my reflections as you will.

Initial impression:

I'm sure the Eagle and Sparrow will appreciate some more bird friends. Though I think the Kestrel might want to have words.

Engineering:

  • The layout of this room seems to be surrendering some space and utility in favor of a view. Which I feel is not doing you any favors.

  • Given the space of this room I believe that you could easily justify adding a table for your poor toolbox to rest on.

  • Likewise having some tools, such as the gravity generator, trapped behind the nitrogen cannister does strike me as being somewhat claustrophobic given the generous space available.

  • It might be helpful if the smuggling area could be accessed from inside of the engineering wing.

Power:

  • At present your power demands are taxing your single generator. I would suggest considering making your power system a tad more robust. A second generator and SMES might not be out of order to keep up with demand.

Atmosphere:

  • Your exhaust system is feeding into a scrubber beneath a thruster. You will want to replace that with a passive vent, which will offgas the system into space.

  • The main galley likely wouldn't be hurt by having a few more scrubbers and vents. Ditto the airlocks.

  • Your distro lines by the conveyor system are running through many obstructing walls. Those are going to be challenging to access. I think you'll be thanked for running pipes through doors where possible and across open spaces when practical.

  • Firelocks under your internal doors would be a solid addition.

Specific reflections:

  • The engineering bay is sufficient enough in size that you could likely move those gyros indoors. They are a little trapped at present.

  • The aft airtight plastic flaps should have directional fans beneath them. Those are easily dislodged and the end result could be some rather hilarious space wind.

  • I don't feel that the cargo conveyors would be done a disservice by having 1 lever for each system.

Aesthetic reflections:

  • Button frames feel inconsistent.

  • The tile work under doors could use some attention, I believe.

  • Your captain might like a chair for their desk.

General impressions:

This shuttle is not wanting for interior space. If you wanted to load up a lot of stuff you absolutely can.

In the case of the Osprey I currently find myself thinking that there is room for the ship's internal space to be devoted to really leaning into emphasizing spaces and the personality of those areas. This ship is very large! But I see suits for 5 and a single bed in a living room. It feels like some of the more crew and spaces elements are still emerging.

There's space to spare and the engineering bay looks a little bit like it was a place to put things. There's an ore processor but it's just in a corner.

I feel like if you really leaned into making the best possible use of the space that you have given yourself that you could produce a ship that is a joy for the people who are occupying it and in the process of doing so differentiating the hull and its mission from shuttles such as the Bulker, the Charon and even the Comet. You have a tremendous amount of real estate and floor space available that could work to your benefit to really infuse the ship with some defining character.

Another random dude here! Would it look a little less bare if you decalled the wide open areas?

Yeah I'm very far away from being able to merge this right now so I turned it into a draft.
