Forensics 100 - "VOIP Capture"

We have intercepted a telephone call from the Cyberdyne Systems PBX. Extract the audio from the PCAP file. Decode the data message within using a FSK modem decoder.

PCAP file -> extract wav file from RTP (wireshark-> telephony -> voip streams, right click -> analyze-> minimodem (default 300 baud) -> XOR extracted text with key found in RTP stream

Forensics 250-1 - "Time Travel"

Let's do the time warp again

The challenge provided a windows executable (files\forensics_250_time_travel\timetravel.exe)

  • Initially when run, it requested the epoch time be set to before 872838840 (Aka: Friday, August 29, 1997 2:14:00 AM EDT)

  • Setting the VM clock worked initially, but then when executed the binary would ask the system clock to be frozen at a new epoch: 872838839 (aka one second before doomsday). Prior to checking this, it would calculate pi for a certain amount of iterations then check the clock:

  • Solution: Run app via wine and use faketime app in wine and used linux faketime to spoof system clock, offset time enough that it would account for any delay introduced by the pi calculation

Forensics 250-2 - "Pay2Win"

Skill is more rewarding

  • Linux Binary, statically linked and stripped

  • When executed, printed total memory and was unhappy when it couldn't detect 1TB of ram

  • Initially looked into spoofing /proc/meminfo, but after failing and re-running the app w/ strace, discovered it relied on the sysinfo syscall

  • Attempted LD_PRELOAD, but failed due to the binary being statically compiled

  • (At this point we also knew that the Forensics 300-1 challenge worked via the sysinfo syscall)

  • After some interneting: one can intercept Linux system calls using... ptrace!

  • After (much) more interneting (and some help from GPT): ptracer.c, which helped to identify which register we needed to modify to change the return of the sysinfo syscall: (tl;dr-> RDI)

Guess I'll start a fab.

  1. Running the executable on a Windows VM presented a message stating that the processor name did not contain the text "skynet".

  1. Performed research on how to change the name of a processor in a VMware virtual machine by Googling "change cpu name vmware". Came across this site:
