Wio Terminal Usage

The Wio Terminal can be powered on using the switch on the left side. Before powering on, ensure that the Wio Terminal is connected to a power source (to an external battery / power bank or computer) through a USB-C cable.

Navigation through the Wio Terminal screens can be achieved using the thumb-stick buttons on the bottom right of the front side. Valid directional presses are RIGHT, LEFT, UP, DOWN and MID (pressing on the thumb-stick), depending on the screen context.

When powered, on the Wio Terminal will prompt the user with a choice to establish MQTT connection or not. This connection is necessary to transmit recorded sensor data to the Terminarium web application user interface and realize the system's remote monitoring feature.

Establishing MQTT connection

If selecting to establish connection, the user will be prompted to confirm their network information (SSID and MQTT broker address). From this screen, if the user desires to modify this information, they can press the DOWN button as prompted. This will bring up an onscreen keyboard that can be navigated freely using the directional thumb-stick buttons.

Once user has finished inputting a new SSID, Password and MQTT Broker Address, they will be returned to the network info confirmation screen. When confirmed, the connection process will begin, and if successful will take the user to the dashboard screen.

It at any point the user wishes to manually interrupt the connection while establishing Wifi / MQTT connection, or wishes to disconnect from it if already established, they can simply restart the Wio Terminal (see below).

Navigating the Dashboard and Sensor Screens

The main screen is the dashboard, in which all current sensor values are displayed. Using the LEFT and RIGHT buttons, the user can cycle between all the dashboard and the individual sensor screens, which contain additional information on whether the conditions are within, above or below acceptable ranges.

The dashboard can be returned to from any sensor screen using the UP and DOWN buttons.

Updating Sensor Ranges

Acceptable upper and lower sensor ranges can be configured from the Terminarium web application and therefore require an established MQTT connection to be received and displayed by the Wio Terminal. When received, there will be visual feedback in the form of an update screen with a progress bar.

Offline Use

If desired, the Wio Terminal can be used as a standalone terrarium monitoring system solely through the UI on its LCD interface. If the user opts-out of establishing MQTT connection when prompted, they are redirected to the dashboard and can view displayed readings directly from there.

Connection can still be established at a further time either by clicking the MID button from the dashboard / sensor screen, or by restarting the Wio Terminal (see below).

Restarting the Wio Terminal

Restarting is possible by quickly flicking the power switch on the left side downwards. This will reset the state of the Wio Terminal, disconnecting from WiFi if currently connected, and run the program from the start (returning to the screen prompting the user to establish MQTT connection).
