Washington Election Shapefiles (select counties and school districts)

These shapefiles were obtained from the State of Washington and processed by members of the Metric Geometry and Gerrymandering Group (MGGG), Geodata Bootcamp (GDBC) alum Camryn Hollarsmith, and our collaborators.

They include Benton County, Chelan County, Pierce County, King County, and Wenatchee Unified School District.

Sources

The county precinct shapefiles were obtained from the Washington Secretary of State. Election data come from the Washington Secretary of State Elections Division. 2010 Decennial Census demographic data were downloaded from the Census API. The 2010 census block shapefile for all of Washington state, election districts, and school districts were downloaded from the US Census Bureau’s TIGER/Line Shapefiles.

Processing

Some very minor boundary edits were necessary to validate the geometry. Demographic data were aggregated from the block level using MGGG’s proration software.

Projection

These shapefiles use a NAD83/UTM Zone 10N projection (ESPG:6339).

Rating

We give these shapefiles an A rating. All data were obtained from the state government and were processed under MGGG supervision. Some county-level vote totals for elections differ from reported totals by up to 3.02%, especially in Chelan County. This is entirely because votes are unreported in several precincts to protect voter privacy.
