This mod adds some (optional) improvements to foxes. When untamed, they behave like they do in new vanilla versions. But as a fox defeats enemies, it gains EXP and unlocks various new abilities and AI improvements.

This system can be disabled, or configured to unlock all abilities from the start.

EXP

When a fox defeats a monster, it gains the same amount of EXP the player would get from defeating it (plus a small random bonus). The EXP rate is halved during the day, so going hunting during the night is advisable.

For reference, a regular vanilla mob drops 5 EXP.

Foxes are born with the average of their parents' EXP minus a small random penalty.

There is no way to check how much EXP a fox has in-game. However, the abilities marked in bold below can be used as indicators for how far along the progression a fox is.

WOUNDED_SCREECH The fox emits a screech when its health gets below 25% 5
EAT_TO_HEAL The fox regains health when it eats food (fed by dropping it). The amount of half-hearts healed corresponds to the amount of half-drumsticks of hunger the food restores. 25
BETTER_PICKUP The fox won't drop its weapon to pick up food when fully healed, and it will drop the food it's holding to pick up nearby swords when in combat. 25
FASTER_EATING The fox will eat food faster the more wounded it is. 25
WOUNDED_AI The fox is better at surviving when low on health.
  • It can eat food in combat when below 50% health
  • It will run to pick up nearby food when below 50% health.
  • It will flee from combat when below 25% health.

AVOID_PRIMED_CREEPERS The fox will run away from primed creepers. 25
FOLLOW_OWNER The fox will follow its owner after being fed a sweet berry. It will stop following if it gets over 64 blocks away. 25
IMPROVED_HELD_ITEM_RENDERING The fox will hold swords in its mouth properly instead of looking like it's trying to eat it. 50
FLEE_DODGE 50% chance for attacks to miss when the fox is fleeing from combat. 50

ESCALATE_AGRESSION The fox will track enemies more closely when it or its owner are wounded. 50
INTRINSIC_LOOTING Looting I will be applied to fox kills. Does not stack with swords enchanted with Looting. 50
SWORD_BLOCK 33% chance to block attacks when holding a sword, halving damage. 70
