I've asked the user to confirm this addresses their issue -- hopefully before merging this.

@eborisch I don't know if this helps, but it may also work for users to pass the -shlib option to the h5fc wrapper when compiling Fortran HDF5 programs. This appears to be an issue specifically when HDF5 is initialized from a Fortran program that is linked statically against HDF5. We're still investigating to see where the issue comes from.
