Data Literacy Course

Aim

The aim of this course is to provide a solid foundation for understanding data. Understanding data collection through to presentation is important for helping us navigate our day to day lives.

Audience

The course will be aimed at people with little to no prior knowledge of data, and aims to ensure they are confident handling data, and have the solid understanding needed to be able to further grow their understanding once the course is complete.

Systems

The course will use Power BI to work with data as it helps surface the important concepts well. This course could be taught using other, similar tools.

  1. Register with your work / school email address
  2. Download the superhero data we’ll be utilising
  3. [Optional] Install the Power BI desktop app on your Windows machine

Measure of Success

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • Explain what data is, why it is important, where it comes from, and how it is used
  • Analyse data from simple sources like spreadsheet
  • Think about data sources in a structural fashion
  • Understand the correct way to structure data for easy and reliable consumption
  • Build effective reports
