Shouldn't there be 1.26 images published and shouldn't the default be shifted to 1.26?

Pre-built node images are published with KIND releases, there's a lot of context there that i'm not going to reiterate. There are multiple issues in the tracker discussing what we should do instead, the proposals are not complete. Happy to have input on those.

In the meantime I hope to have a new release cut soon along with images, but right now my personal attention is fully on keeping the Kubernetes project funded (see e.g. https://kubernetes.io/blog/2022/11/28/registry-k8s-io-faster-cheaper-ga/) and priority will remain there until we're not on track to run out of funds this year.

@aojea may be able to cut a new release sooner.

In the meantime:
https://kind.sigs.k8s.io/docs/user/quick-start/#creating-a-cluster

Prebuilt images are hosted atkindest/node, but to find images suitable for a given release currently you should check the release notes for your given kind version (check with kind version) where you'll find a complete listing of images created for a kind release.

Building your own:

Sorry, I'm aware this is confusing and frustrating, we've attempted to document the current state and hold discussions on how to reach a better approach. Please help with fleshing out the solutions to those problems. In the meantime building arbitrary versions that support the version of kind you're using should be pretty well documented.

Circling back: There has in fact been a 1.26 image since 1.26 was released in Kubernetes, in general to find images please see the release notes as noted in the docs. It was added to the v0.17 release notes then and shared in our slack and on twitter as well https://kubernetes.slack.com/archives/CEKK1KTN2/p1670616595999939

https://github.com/kubernetes-sigs/kind/releases/tag/v0.17.0

We usually cut a kind release when there's a Kubernetes release, but we didn't have many changes to release and had recently released, so 1.26.0 was added to v0.17 image list instead.

We'll probably be doing another release next week with some bug fixes and updated images.
