This commit:

ec39d10#diff-1be6997ca515c6fc8b54466206d89067

Adds fieldname to the end of the metric name without an intervening period. i.e. if you have a metric like 'x.y.z', you end up with 'x.y.zvalue' (which looks a bit ugly).

Does it need to be there?
