This is progress towards #105. See commit messages for more details.

I'm working on changes that will require this functionality in multiple
places.
Such a distinction hasn't been necessary so far. I'm making it now, for
the following reasons:
1. I'd like to use an external library for parts of triangulation, which
   requires that distinction.
2. This distinction is made in the literature, so I'm fairly confident
   that it will be required at some point anyway.
