Just learned about this from @whitmo pointing me at Hacker School FAQ, where it's mentioned.

No dice. I reached out to check on the status of my application, and received the following reply:

Dear Chad,

Thank you for submitting an application for the Shuttleworth Foundation Fellowship Programme. We have received many excellent applications, so making a decision has been a difficult task.

We appreciate the passion and commitment to social change that went into your submission. However, in relation to other applications received, it was not the best fit for this particular fellowship. With a limited number of spots available, unfortunately we will not be offering you a Fellowship.

Thanks again for the time and effort invested in the application and review process. We wish you all the best in finding the right support.

At least I don't have to wait until February to find out (their website says answers by February).

what about something like kickstarter?

@whitmo Shuttleworth was going to be a year's salary. You think we could pull that off in a kickstarter (#98)?

maybe? people have gotten tons of dough for less work (ex.
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/150422311/screencasting-a-complete-redesign).

You could also do it for specific features (international billing, etc).

or (wait for it)..............

maybe bounties are another good way to fund gittip's development and a
good feature for gittip itself to offer.
