Create an icon font #1
Comments
Please skip SVG fonts in webpage loaders, since Chrome/Blink is dropping support for it; I don't see any need in browsers anymore. |
I didn't think about anything but web-pages, thanks for the reminder @Dzonatas [edited my post above for dropping SVG support for web only]. |
Found this on https://www.reddit.com/r/MaterialDesign and just assumed it would be an icon font, since the icons are all monochrome. Was severely disappointed to find it as old school pngs. Once this is an icon font, I can probably get rid of font awesome in my new stuff, especially things that implement https://material.angularjs.org/ |
I too was hoping to see this be a web font like Font Awesome. |
@bbodenmiller, yeah... +1 |
Unofficial fonts here: https://github.com/FezVrasta/bootstrap-material-design/tree/master/fonts |
We're trying to make sure the Web font that gets released has high quality representations of all glyphs. Hang on in there and we'll hopefully have something to show soonish. |
Another unofficial version: http://zavoloklom.github.io/material-design-iconic-font/ |

Hey folks. Quick update: We know that the icon font is in high demand at the moment and work on the official one is still on-going. I unfortunately don't have a precise release date for you, other than "hopefully soon". In the mean time, perhaps it makes sense for us to get behind a reliable community authored icon font that we can link to from the README. This would at least help fill in the gaps until the icons team are ready with their version. Again, sorry for the delay here! |
If @FezVrasta has time to NPM / Bower that webfont above it would probably be the best* option. * I renamed 40% of the icons from the official set for MaterialDesignIcons.com to follow a more Font Awesome naming scheme. That with all the community icons it might make the transition to an official webfont clunky. |
I've created a repository just for the iconic font here: https://github.com/FezVrasta/material-design-iconfont I've not experience with CDN and even the ones of my theme was created by someone else so if someone wants to add this repo to CNDJS or JSDelivr please do it! I will refer to this repository even on my theme if it gets approved as "unofficial_but_official" repo. |
👍 |
@FezVrasta; your version is already on jsDelivr: http://www.jsdelivr.com/#!bootstrap.material-design |
seems to be fixed ;) http://google.github.io/material-design-icons/#icon-font-for-the-web |
Finally, thanks Google! 🎈 |

That's right! Come and get it folks! |
What's the difference between the Fonticons Material Design icons and these official ones? Both are by Google but the Fonticons has extras ( https://fonticons.com/fonts/material-design/regular (1134 icons · 24px · v1.1.34 · by Google) |
Looks like the official font has no support for half-transparent icons like the signal and battery indicators :( |
@kamranayub The Fonticons version is the same as the official version. We waited to add them until there was something official. Happy to chat more offline and not hijack this thread. :) |
@davegandy It looks like you're using the community version (v1.1.34 latest) and not the official one. Until the community one is synced up in the next week it is missing some of the new icons that were recently added. |
@Templarian Okay, I think I'm confused. This is what we're using: https://github.com/google/material-design-icons/tree/master/iconfont. Is that not the latest official version from Google? How is materialdesignicons.com related? |
@Templarian Looks like we might have grabbed the wrong version. Very confusing. We'll update quickly. |
@davegandy No problem. Yea, the community version predates the official one, so it probably turned up in the search results. When the project was started it was before we knew Google was even going to open source their icon set. Kind of stuck with the naming now due to a lot of open source projects referencing it. |
I need a vacation. |

@neerajsohal We've created one. Read this |
@shyndman Some icons in the icon font have issues, see battery_20 for an example, it doesn't ouput anything. Maybe this is related to the transparency issue related above? Thanks |
@diosney please file new issues if you think there are bugs in the found. that ticket was about creating a font initial. |
@hebbet OK, no problem. |
An icon font is being worked on at the moment and we're hoping to ship it sometime soon :)
This issue is mostly a placeholder to remind us to include it.
