Well the canonical repo doesn't have the POD documentation this one includes, so … |

Debian and Fedora point to https://savannah.nongnu.org/projects/git2cl as source, which seems more likely. |

Thanks - I have pushed this upstream on Savannah + GitLab, new release coming up shortly. I have no idea what this GitHub mirror is, so I'm just leaving a comment here. |

There's basically no system out there that defaults to anything else. This includes git's commit logs.
Thus, just default to UTF-8.
