Think this should implement the approach from: https://lmsys.org/blog/2023-11-21-lookahead-decoding/

  • The approach requires large batches to be decoded, which in turn requires a lot of FLOPS even for single stream
  • Haven't done extensive tests on NVIDIA GPUs yet, but on Apple Silicon I don't observe speed-ups with 7B F16 models, likely due to small compute
  • As usual quantum models would require efficient batch CUDA kernels which we haven't implemented yet, so I don't expect speed-up there as well for the moment

In llama.cpp the required attention mask is achieved with the following llama_batch:

  • Pass W, N, G from command-line (currently hardcoded)
  • Decode the verification n-grams via tree-based decoding. Since most of the n-grams share common prefixes, we can ramp-up the number G at no additional computational cost. See speculative example for a demonstration of tree-based decoding

I don't see a speedup with CUDA/3090 Ti, but it is not too far off, about 10% slower than main. Maybe after tuning the parameters it could be an speedup.

Thanks for giving it a try. I've just fixed a small bug in the assignment of the seq_id of the lookahead tokens - no significant changes in the performance though.

Probably need to do some tests on A100 and see if we can match the results from the blog.
But maybe in the future, unless somebody already has access and gives it a try.

At least I think this example can serve as a demonstration for implementing similar techniques in the future.

I run it on A100 and it seems broken (generation stops after a few tokens):

does it work with CPU-based inference? and are there any plans to include it into http api server example?

EDIT: tested on cpu, lookahead is much slower than main, almost unusable.

tested on g5.xlarge, with the following parameters, main is still bit faster

This happens a few times, but alloc is never set to NULL, and many lines below,
