A connected but uninitialized client is of no use for any API client. Therefore, this PR unifies both operations into one (retriable) operation.
This dramatically simplifies the internals of the client, making it simpler to maintain and detect bugs.
In particular, I think this finally fixes some issues with the retry logic.
