Rsv

A dependency-free implementation of the Rows of String Values specification. A Ruby implementation already exists, but I thought it would be an interesting exercise to write one myself to understand it better.

Installation

Install the gem and add to the application's Gemfile by executing:

$ bundle add rsv

If bundler is not being used to manage dependencies, install the gem by executing:

$ gem install rsv

Usage

require "rsv"

rows = [
    ["Hello", "🌍"],
    [],
    [nil, ""]
]

Rsv.encode(rows)
=> [72, 101, 108, 108, 111, 255, 240, 159, 140, 141, 255, 253, 253, 254, 255, 255, 253]

Rsv.write_file("test/test.rsv", rows)
=> 17

test_rows = Rsv.read_file("test/test.rsv")
=> [["Hello", "🌍"], [], [nil, ""]]

rows == test_rows
=> true

Development

After checking out the repo, run bin/setup to install dependencies. Then, run rake test to run the tests. You can also run bin/console for an interactive prompt that will allow you to experiment.

To install this gem onto your local machine, run bundle exec rake install. To release a new version, update the version number in version.rb, and then run bundle exec rake release, which will create a git tag for the version, push git commits and the created tag, and push the .gem file to rubygems.org.
