I think, every 30 seconds, we run the global XSLT transforms on an XML that won't be checked, thus using up valuable CPU time. At about 7s a run (on my machine) that's running a fait bit in the background.
Switching to a passthrough check will still make sure the API is up, but won't tax the CPU as much.
