Kibana Build details:

VERSION: 8.16.0 SNAPSHOT
BUILD: 77679
COMMIT: 6b091fe3b410eaae9d4805c0a3c0ea6168bf66b0

VERSION: 8.15.1 SNAPSHOT
BUILD: 76479
COMMIT: d3293f748cb6d5a16fcc398cf0253fa2c4cc1552

Host OS: Windows

Preconditions:

  1. 8.16.0 SNAPSHOT Kibana cloud environment should be available.
  2. Few Agents should be installed.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Navigate to Fleet>Agents tab.
  2. Observe host names are visible with Upper case.

Expected Result:
Hostnames should be displayed in lowercase as they were originally set.

What's working:

  • Hostnames are correctly shown in lowercase when lower version agents are installed on the same host.

What's not working fine

  • The issue is specifically reproducible with 8.16.0 and 8.15.1 artifacts.

On your windows host, is the Hostname uppercase or lowercase?
It might be related to elastic/beats#39993
In short, we had a long period where hostnames were lowercased but they shouldn't be lowercased and in 8.16.0 the hostname is reported as defined on the host.
But I'm surprised to see this also in 8.15.1.

Hi Team

Thanks for looking into this issue.

We have re-validated this issue on latest 8.15.1 and 8.15.4 kibana cloud environment and had below observation:

Observations:

  • Host name is visible on fleet tab as same as available on windows host

Screen Shot:

  • Fleet Tab

  • Endpoint

Please let us know if anything else is required from our end.

Thanks!

Hello @cmacknz
According to the tests above, the agent seems to report the agent name to match the exact host name in Fleet UI. It seems to have changed of behavior on 8.15.1+.
But according to the release notes, this should have changed in 8.16.0+ (Release notes)

The fix (to stop lower-casing host names) was added from 8.15.1 as side-effect of elastic/elastic-agent#5261 and did not make it to the 8.15.1 release notes
